Fabric Yardage Calculator
Estimate fabric drops and total length in metres and yards from a finished curtain width that already includes fullness. Fullness is not counted twice on this page. Equal panels are planned independently with an editable seam allowance on each joining edge. Side hems, header/hem allowances and a straight vertical pattern repeat are editable. Half-drop matching is not supported.

Workings
- Finished width (fullness already included): 4000 mm — fullness is not applied again on this page
- Equal panels (offcuts not shared): 2 panels → 2000 mm finished width each
- Required cut width per panel: 2000 mm + 2 × 50 mm side hem = 2100 mm
- Drops per panel (joined usable width): minimum n=2: 2 × 1370 − 2 × 15 × 1 = 2710 mm ≥ 2100 mm
- Total fabric drops: 2 per panel × 2 panels = 4
- Cut drop before repeat: 2400 + 200 header + 150 hem = 2750 mm
- Straight vertical repeat rounding: Plain fabric (repeat 0) — no vertical repeat rounding
- Total fabric: 4 drops × 2750 mm = 11000 mm = 11.000 m = 12.030 yd
Each panel joins 2 fabric drops (1 seam). Seam allowance is taken on every joining edge.
Defaults are illustrative planning assumptions and remain editable.
Offcuts are not shared between independently cut equal panels.
Straight vertical pattern match only. Half-drop is unsupported. Extra pattern alignment across joins may need workroom confirmation.
Planning lengths only — not a professional cutting ticket.
Need fullness from a pole or track first? Use the curtain size calculator.
How fabric yardage is planned
- Enter usable fabric width and the total finished curtain width after fullness.
- Set panel count for equal panels. Each panel is planned alone so leftover width is not shared with another panel.
- For each panel, find the minimum whole drops whose usable joined width covers the finished panel width plus both outer side hems, subtracting seam allowance on every joining edge.
- Add header and hem allowances to the finished drop.
- For patterned cloth, enter one straight vertical repeat. The cut drop is rounded up to whole repeats. Half-drop is unsupported; extra pattern alignment across joins may need workroom confirmation.
- Total drops = drops per panel × panel count. Total length = total drops × cut drop.
Worked example
Finished width 4000 mm (already 2× fullness on a 2000 mm track), 2 panels, usable width 1370 mm, finished drop 2400 mm, side hem 50 mm, seam allowance 15 mm per joining edge, header 200 mm, hem 150 mm:
- Required cut width per panel = 2000 + 2 × 50 = 2100 mm
- 1 drop gives 1370 mm (too narrow); 2 drops give 2 × 1370 − 2 × 15 × 1 = 2710 mm
- Drops per panel = 2; total drops = 2 × 2 panels = 4
- Cut drop (plain) = 2400 + 200 + 150 = 2750 mm
- Total = 4 × 2750 mm = 11.000 m
- With a 640 mm straight repeat: cut drop ceilings to 3200 mm → 12.800 m
Fabric yardage FAQ
Does this page apply fullness again?
No. Enter the total finished curtain width after fullness. Fullness belongs on the curtain size calculator so the same gather is not counted twice.
How is fabric drop count calculated?
Equal panels are planned independently. For each panel the tool finds the minimum whole drops whose usable joined width (n × usable width − 2 × seam allowance × (n − 1)) covers that panel’s finished width plus both outer side hems. Total drops = drops per panel × panel count. Offcuts are not shared between panels.
How does vertical pattern repeat rounding work?
Cut drop before repeat is finished drop plus header and hem. With a straight vertical repeat above zero, that length is rounded up to the next whole number of repeats. Plain fabric uses 0 and skips repeat rounding.
Is half-drop matching supported?
No. Only a straight vertical match is modelled. Half-drop, offset, railroaded and other layouts need a separately verified workroom method. Extra pattern alignment across joins may also need workroom confirmation.
Are the metre and yard totals a cutting ticket?
No. They are planning lengths with editable assumptions. Confirm usable width, batch, shrinkage and maker method before ordering or cutting.
